About Koziakas Forest Reserve

Koziakas Forest Reserve is located in the Thessaly region of central Greece, encompassing a significant portion of the Koziakas mountain range. The reserve protects a largely forested landscape composed mainly of fir, pine, and oak species, providing an important habitat for regional fauna including deer, wild boar, and numerous bird species such as eagles and woodpeckers. The area lies at elevations ranging from approximately 800 to 1,900 meters, resulting in varied microclimates and biodiversity. Historically, Koziakas has been a source of timber and charcoal but has been designated as a forest reserve to preserve its ecological value and natural beauty. It offers visitors a peaceful retreat with numerous marked trails suitable for day hikes and longer excursions, showcasing scenic viewpoints and traditional mountain villages nearby. The reserve's landscape includes deep valleys, rocky outcrops, and clear streams, making it an attractive destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Ecotourism is encouraged through sustainable trail usage and respect for local flora and fauna. While not as frequented by international tourists as other Greek protected areas, Koziakas provides an authentic experience with relatively unspoiled nature. Wildlife watching, hiking, mountain biking, and photography are popular activities. Visitors can access the forest year-round, but spring through autumn offers the most comfortable conditions for exploring. The area is also important from a conservation standpoint, with efforts to maintain its native forest cover and protect endangered species.
